2023 New Challenges [Highlights]
Program #1 New Year New You by Daily Stoics
Pro 1: Stoics Today’s Challenge [Day 14]: Free yourself from Dopamine
Today's challenge is to do a dopamine fast; during the fast, you remove the things you desire that ultimately distract you in unhealthy ways. The suggestions of items you could give up include; Digital (phone, tv, social media) and Food (sugar, caffeine, and junk food). Other (smoking, drinking). The purpose of the fast is to reset your levels and make it easier to go without for more extended periods.

Awful Eternities
Today's big story is based on a quote read from Austin Kleon's book Keep Going. He pulled the quote from Richmond Walker’s book of meditations for recovering alcoholics. Here’s the quote:
"It is only when you and I add the burden of those two awful eternities, yesterday and tomorrow, that we break down. It is not the experience of today that drives men mad. It is remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday or the dread of what tomorrow may bring. Let us therefore do our best to live but one day at a time."
We've all heard quotes about being present, and there is only now; the past is gone, and the future isn't here, so why worry about it. Walker paints a picture of the torture we can endure, dwelling on before and after. One day at a time is a mantra I repeat daily and have for years; it does bring me back to the center; it's a daily reset.
The truth is time is real, and despite the quotes and the mantras, we live our lives by it. Sometimes we can't forget the past; if the future wasn't necessary, what would we do with all the calendars? Learn from the past to reduce the bitterness and build up each day, then look forward with less dread.
Stranger Things
Interesting Diet
Part literature, part cookbook, and interesting concept, author Dinah Fried wrote a book called Fictitious Dishes. Fried takes the reader on a journey and recreates meals from several famous books in this book. A few of the authors included in this work are; Lewis Carroll (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland), Jack Kerouac (On the Road), and Herman Melville (Moby-Dick). Recreated dishes to go with the written descriptions, the book includes imagery that may or may not go with the picture you have in your head when you read the book. Nevertheless, it's a fascinating idea and deserves a shout-out!

I want to rock
There is a club in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with live music every Friday that brings a loyal following of regulars who have been going to this club for decades. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan; it would be expected for a club to have live music in a college town, also wouldn't make for much of a story. The story is most of the participants are over 65, and every Friday night from September to May, the "Geezer Dance Party" comes alive.
Stop and Stare
This story follows many of the stories this month on relationships. These senior party-goers don't care what a person of experience is supposed to be doing; they want to listen to music, dance, and date! In addition to the group, the staff at the club love them. Chelsea Anderson, a young bartender at the club, says, "Everybody loves each other. It's a stark difference from the late crowd, where everyone is upset and barfing.
Soul Asylum Seekers
Brothers from another land
If you ask Bruce Springsteen, whose experience and consistency in the rock-n-roll business is solid, who his favorite punk rock singers are, his answers wouldn't surprise anyone. In an article by Rafael Polcaro in Rock and Roll Garage, he pulls together quotes and lists Springsteen made in the past to develop the story.
Joe Strummer
Springsteen loves The Clash and Joe Strummer, and based on the quote from Strummer, he felt the same for Springsteen:
"Bruce is not on an ego trip. Bruce is actually into the music. We need people like this. A lot of records today are made by people just to feed their fame. Bruce is great. There aint no whinging whining or complaining. There's only great music, lyrics and an ocean of talent." Me? I love Springsteen!!!"
Johnny Rotten
The article doesn't detail Springsteen's appreciation for Rotten, and it appears they have yet to meet. Springsteen listed Rotten as number 11 on his list of best singers. The story goes on to say that Springsteen did go to see Rotten when he was singing with P.I.L. (Public Image Limited), but Rotten found out that he was in the audience and did what Rotten usually does, mocking him.
Industrial Designs
Fire Eyes
This website has you covered if a picture can make you feel like you are in a cozy cabin. According to the designers, the space created merges the forest landscape and a nearby river bank. The dense tree cover will add shade to the structure, and the massive windows will open to sunlight whenever you want. The design gives new meaning to the term treehouse.
