Tim Miller from The Bulwark hosts an interview podcast on Sundays, and today, he interviewed Clint Smith, the author of How the Word Is Passed. The conversation is open and honest, and Smith speaks with enormous class on difficult subjects. The line that Smith used in this interview that struck me the most was the line he used when talking at first about tour guides and historians. Smith talks about Grace and Generosity, people trying to tell the story of a location or time in history, and why leading with both is important in this type of discussion.
Storytellers
As I listened, I thought about wars, suppression, slavery, and the civil rights movements of the past. I only know about these events or historical moments from the stories I see, hear, and read. I’ve never experienced any of them personally. This is why the stories, the sites, and the history are so important, and the stories Smith tells are told without overt bias from many different perspectives.
Benchmarks
The powerful and how frightened the powerful always seem to be of losing what they have. The rest of us are less frightened and grateful for what we’ve got, and the best of us live with Grace and Generosity. Think about that the next time you are trying to determine what’s important in your relationships; think about when you can act with grace and generosity; only the most confident people do it with a genuine smile.
