[Vol. 2 Issue #7]
Sunday
A sleepy Sunday morning, more imagery than words today. Sleeping in today as a cold front helps us regulate our resting temperatures. Highlights include a story about landline phones and moving away from a sharing community. More images from creators and why professionals do it better. Finally, another indie music documentary shows how much fun making things for your friends can be.

Land Line
With all we do these days, we are built for distractions. Of the many ways the old days forced us into focus, the good ol’ Landline was one of them. Most homes had one, and when you were on it, you were handcuffed with a curly cord between your ear and a box the size of a toaster. The writer Ian Bogost has a piece in The Atlantic about the Landline, and he talks about having to share a phone. Can you imagine sharing a phone, one phone for an entire house – it’s like the dark ages!?
Forgot How to Share
All those things we used to share in a household are gone. Remember fighting over the remote, debates over who would watch what and when? Those days are gone; most kids these days think the T.V. is on a phone or tablet. We all get our own stuff, do our own things, and bump into each other, coming and going from wherever. The lights get a little lower without the need to discuss, debate, share, compromise, and communicate.
Another Symptom
It's funny; a device designed to communicate is another device that alienates us from the people we live with. The iPhone generation will never know what it's like to pick up a phone, hear a dial tone, or, better yet, hear someone else's conversation. Never know what it is like to be in a conversation and think that you hear someone quietly pick up another phone in the house to listen in on your conversation! We are increasingly getting away from the need to communicate, tolerate, and share things. Another symptom of the disease called loneliness.

Day & Night
In another example of using technology to create art, photographer Stephen Wilkes takes multiple images and weaves them together to form a single image that captures an entire day. We first noticed how the natural light looked like time-lapse photography stopped in the middle. The result is a beautiful image, enhanced through a person’s creativity using technology. Wilkes creates a melody with images, a song for your eyes.

Pictures of You
Gary Hershorn is a photojournalist in N.Y.C.; his pictures remind us that no matter how great the phone will make a picture look, a good professional photographer knows what photo to take.

Indie Sounds
If punk started in the 70s and became a new wave and alt-rock in the 80s, the 90s could have made it mainstream. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit continues to top many all-time song lists. As alternative rock music became more mainstream, indie and punk went deeper and deeper underground. A new documentary goes into an indie scene from the 90s in Athens, GA, and shows what a group of friends interested in original music can do. Athens is a college town in G.A., notable for the birth of bands like R.E.M. and The B-52s; The Elephant 6 Recording Co. took that same spirit to continue a sound without a genre.
