Reading is Contagious
One of the statements I keep on my desk is the statement, "Fun to read, is fun to write." Working on my second mountain with decades of experience behind me, the projects I choose to work on aren't mission-critical like the ones I started my career in business with. I love to read, and if I had to pick my dream job, it would be to read all day long. A friend of the work and someone I've highlighted often since my introduction to him a couple of years ago is Austin Kleon.
Reading Club
In his newsletter last week, Kleon outlines his thoughts on reading and how he uses it for his writing and design work. Kleon is an artist and writer and, like Tim Urban and Lawrence Yeo, adds drawings to his writing that help to emphasize and entertain the reader of his work. In this newsletter, he talks about becoming a professional writer in part so he could (continue) to be a professional reader. A great job if you are lucky enough to get it and can discipline yourself to turn reading into something that will benefit others.
If you are a reader, this newsletter will resonate; if you are a writer, this perspective is even more important, and we can all read more!

The eighties
Killing Joke is another band born out of the punk scene from the 70s. The more I listen and read about the history of my musical youth, the more I appreciate how much the spirit of punk rock inspired the bands I listened to in the 80s. The bands in the 80s combined the spirit with better musicians, better tech, and a decade of practice and turned the 80s into a creative scene. Kevin "Geordie" Walker was the guitarist for Killing Joke and passed away after experiencing a stroke in November. This video tells you everything you need to know about the scene, all our energy and angst directed at every power-hungry institution trying to sell us salvation.
