Bigmouth Strikes Again:

Big Story #1 - Titanium Sponge
Titanium has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than steel; it is more temperature resistant and more resistant to corrosion. The core elements that makeup Titanium are more abundant than steel, and Titanium’s primary use is in paint, coatings, plastics, and rubber. Titanium is also used in aerospace and defense to build airframes, ships, and ground vehicles. Lithium-titanate batteries and geothermal energy generation also take advantage of Titanium.
A material that is stronger and more abundant than steel must be everywhere. We are currently running into a Titanium crisis that has gotten the attention of the U.S. defense department. Companies in China and Russia now dominate the Titanium Sponge, the raw material used to make Titanium. To further complicate matters, the U.S. gets most of its Titanium from Japan, and the next non-Russian/China producer of Titanium is Ukraine.
A few other companies are looking at new ways to refine and produce Titanium; our friends at Visual Capitalist worked with IperionX and created a great walkthrough here. The Wall Street Journal also had a story on the Geopolitical impacts of Titanium that is worth the read.
Story #2 - DotCom Bubble 2.0
Axios reported that the tech/financial environment is similar to the Dot Com Bubble in the early 2000s. In 2000 we had spent big on a Y2K problem that wasn’t a problem, fears of a recession, and what turned out to be a prolonged slump in the post-9/11 attacks.
What are we looking at
Meta (Facebook) stock is down almost 70% for the year. That’s $800 Billion if you are counting.
Amazon reported its slowest quarter ever.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq is down almost 30% for the year.
Most of the major tech companies have slowed or put a freeze on all hiring.
Amid challenges, innovation and clever startups will start to grow. Just ask Google; based on timing, one could say they were birthed from the last bubble.
