Education
One of the books I added to my daily reads list this year is Ryan Holiday’s The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living, a quick daily page with the lessons of the ancient Stoic philosophers with commentary from Holiday to follow. The piece I read today that struck me is from Epictetus, which describes who education is for. The meaning resonates with me as a person who reads and writes daily but wasn't successful in a traditional academic setting.
Education is for those who thirst to learn, seek wisdom, and refuse to let circumstances get in the way of learning. Similar to another favorite quote from Calvin Coolidge, “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence…. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts….” Wisdom comes from a desire and a determination to learn.
The passage from Epictetus:
"…We should not trust the masses who say only the free can be educated, but rather the lovers of wisdom who say that only the educated are free." – Epictetus.
